Before submitting a maintenance request, use the interactive Newark Parks Map to identify whether the park is owned by the City of Newark or Essex County.

City of Newark Responsibilities

City-owned parks are maintained by two departments:

Department of Recreation, Cultural Affairs & Senior Services

  • Building new parks

  • Fixing equipment at existing parks

  • Managing contracted capital improvement work (e.g., Schleifer Park)

Department of Public Works

  • Sanitation

  • Litter and trash removal

  • Snow removal

  • Mowing and pruning

  • Tree maintenance

  • DPW may also contract out park maintenance services

Essex County Responsibilities

The County of Essex is responsible for the upkeep of all county-owned parks, including:

  • Sanitation

  • Litter and trash removal

  • Equipment repair

  • Mowing and pruning
